Summary

Founded in 2014, Capital Index is a British ECN/STP broker offering trading on a relatively limited range of assets, including Forex, commodities, and indices. It has a large account choice to cater to beginner and experienced traders alike, minimum deposits are reasonable – starting at 100 USD on its commission-free entry-level account – and spreads tighten with higher tier account types.  Although Capital Index is an MT4-only broker, it provides fast execution and high-quality customer support to get traders started.

Malaysian traders will be pleased to note that Capital Index offers Islamic swap-free accounts, but support is only offered in English.  A significant drawback is that Capital Index provides a minimal selection of educational and market analysis materials, making it a poor choice for beginner traders.

Capital Index has received modest industry praise for its commitment to quality services and its trading environment: Capital Index won awards for Best Forex ECN/STP Broker and Best Forex CFD Broker 2017 (UK Forex Awards), and Best STP Forex Broker 2016 (Online Personal Wealth Awards). These accolades are a powerful admission of quality and trust from the journalists who report on the industry.

Considering the sound software offering, traditional regulation, and industry recognition for its quality, we deem Capital Index a safe and trustworthy broker.

Trading Conditions

An STP/ECN Capital Index offers trading on multiple assets, including Forex, indices, and commodities. Trading conditions are decent, with spreads starting at 1.40 pips on the EUR/USD and reasonable minimum deposits. Traders can access leverage of up to 500:1, and minimum trade sizes vary depending on the account.  Accounts are denominated in GBP, EUR, and USD, and Capital Index allows all trading strategies, including hedging, scalping, and copy trading.

Capital Index offers Islamic swap-free accounts, which incur a handling fee of 5 USD per night, charged every third night for open positions on major pairs like the EUR/USD, but varies according to the instrument being traded.  This information is not published on Capital Index’s website, and traders can contact customer support for more details on swap-free accounts.

Capital Index offers traders four different account types: Advanced, Pro, Black, and Copy trading. Traders can expect tighter spreads and larger trading increments in exchange for more substantial deposits.  See below for more details:

Advanced Account

The minimum deposit on this account is 100 GBP/EUR/USD and spreads start at 1.40 pips on the EUR/USD, which is in line with the industry average.  Traders can access leverage of up to 500:1, minimum trade sizes are 0.01 lots, and no commissions are charged.

Pro Account

The minimum deposit on the commission-free Pro Accounts is 1,000 GBP/EUR/USD.  Variable spreads are tight, starting at 1.0 pips on the EUR/USD.  The maximum leverage is up to 500:1, and minimum trade sizes start at 0.01 lots.

Black Account

The Capital Index Black Account is for serious traders and by invitation only.  Minimum deposits start at 50,000 GBP/EUR/USD on this account, and spreads are extremely tight, starting at 0.4 pips on the EUR/USD.  A post-trade commission will be applied, but prospective traders will have to talk to an account manager to find out about these charges.

Copy Trading Account

The minimum deposit on the commission-free copy trading Account is 500 GBP/USD.  Spreads start at 1.40 pips on the EUR/USD, which is close to the industry average, and minimum trade sizes are 0.01 lots.

Spreads and Commissions

Spreads start at 1.40 pips for the EUR/USD on the Advanced Account, 1.0 pips (EUR/USD) on the Pro account, and 0.4 pips (EUR/USD) on the Black Account. These are variable spreads that will increase in periods of low liquidity or during major economic events.

A commission is charged on trades on the Black account.

Deposit & Withdrawal fees

In line with Anti-Money Laundering policies, deposits and withdrawals at Capital Index cannot be made to/from third-party accounts.  No deposit or withdrawal fees are charged on any of the payment methods.  See below for details:

  • Bank Wire Transfers: No fee is charged, and deposits and withdrawals take an average of 3 – 5 days to be processed. If requested, a Bank Transfer can be processed on the same day, but an expediting fee of 15 GBP/EUR/USD will be charged.
  • Credit/Debit cards: Deposits are instant and free, but withdrawals may take 3 – 5 to reach your account.

Capital Index does not charge any inactivity fees on dormant accounts.

Capital Index for Beginners

Capital Index is not intended for beginner traders, as educational material and analysis are minimal, and customer service is exclusively for account-related questions.  Capital Index only supports MT4, and beginner traders will likely need assistance setting up and customising the platform before starting to trade.  As Capital Index lacks this support and documentation, it hardens our notion that it is designed for veteran traders.  Furthermore, note that neither the website nor its educational materials are translated into Malay.

Educational Material

Trading guides introduce basic trading concepts like currency pairs, risk management, and order types. Capital Index leaves the advanced trading education, videos, and webinars to other brokers.

Analysis Material

As with the educational material, Capital Index produces in-depth reporting every month, but nothing significant comes from its analysts.

Customer Support

Customer support is available 24/5 via telephone, email, and live chat in English and Russian. A robust complaints procedure is in place, as per regulation, and the customer support team operates under a mantra of treating clients fairly.

For the purposes of this review, we found the customer support polite, responsive, and resourceful.

Capital Index Trading Platform

Capital Index only offers support for the MT4 platform. MT4 is the usual choice for traditional STP brokers, not only because it is the overall industry-leading platform but also for its high-quality execution.

Clients find the software flexible, convenient, and adaptable – including algorithmic trading through Expert Advisers or copy trading. Trading signals and technical analysis, and vast numbers of indicators and analytical objects are fed into the platform, offering traders a huge amount of guidance in one easy-to-use platform.

Capital Index Mobile Apps

Traders have the option of the MT4 suite of products for mobile devices and tablets that offer similar functionality to the desktop product on a single synchronised account.

Evaluation Method

We value transparency and openness in the way we review the partners. To bring transparency to the forefront, we have published our review process that includes a detailed breakdown of the Capital Index offering. Central to that process is the evaluation of the reliability of the broker, the platform offering of the broker and the trading conditions offered to clients, which are summarised in this review. Each one of these is graded, and an overall score is calculated and assigned to the broker.

Capital Index Risk Statement

Trading Forex is risky, and each broker is required to detail how risky the trading of Forex CFDs is to clients.  Capital Index would like you to know that: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 84%of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs and spread bets with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

Overview

Capital Index is a traditional broker focused on delivering the best services to a self-sufficient experienced trader. With support for the MT4 platform, regulation and oversight from the FCA in the United Kingdom, and industry awards recognising this commitment to delivering STP/ECN trading services, Capital Index has a niche all to itself.

Traders looking for tighter spreads and better trading conditions, focusing on a quality trading environment above marketing campaigns, will find Capital Index a welcome choice.
